A longtail boat — called ruea hang yao in Thai — is a traditional wooden vessel powered by a modified automotive engine mounted on a long rotating shaft that extends beyond the stern. The propeller sits at the end of this shaft, which the captain can lift, lower, and pivot to navigate shallow waters and tight spaces that larger boats simply cannot reach.

1. Bring waterproof protection for your phone and camera. Longtails ride lower in the water than speedboats, and sea spray is part of the charm.
2. Wear reef-safe sunscreen — you'll be visiting coral reefs, and chemical sunscreens damage marine life. We provide snorkeling equipment but not sunscreen.
3. Best season: December to April offers the calmest seas and best visibility. But longtail tours run year-round on suitable days — our captains know when conditions are right.
4. Bring cash for any additional stops at local restaurants or shops on the islands. Most island vendors don't accept cards.
5. Book a morning departure for the best snorkeling visibility and calmer seas. Afternoon trips can be beautiful for photography as the light softens.
