Koh Samui is the gateway to some of the best diving in the Gulf of Thailand. While the island's own shoreline is better for snorkeling than serious diving, a short boat ride brings you to Sail Rock and the world-famous sites around Koh Tao — clear water, big schools of fish, and seasonal whale sharks. And you don't need to be a certified diver to experience it: a guided Discover Scuba try-dive lets complete beginners breathe underwater for the first time, safely, with an instructor at their side.
Best Dive Sites Near Koh Samui
Diving from Koh Samui means heading offshore to the Gulf's pinnacles and reefs. These are the sites a dive day actually visits:
Sail Rock (Hin Bai)
The Gulf of Thailand's signature dive site, a lone pinnacle rising from the seabed roughly halfway between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Famous for its swim-through chimney, dense schools of barracuda and trevally, and the best chance in the region to encounter a whale shark (most often March-May). Suitable for try-dives in its shallower sections and a bucket-list site for certified divers.
Koh Tao dive sites
About 90 minutes north by dive boat, Koh Tao is one of the cheapest and most popular places in the world to learn to dive. Sites like Chumphon Pinnacle, Green Rock and Japanese Gardens offer everything from gentle, shallow coral gardens (ideal for beginners) to deeper pinnacles for experienced divers. See our Koh Tao day trip guide for the full picture.
Around Koh Samui & Ang Thong
Closer to home, the reefs around Koh Tan and the protected Ang Thong Marine Park are shallow and calm — perfect for snorkeling and the confined-water part of a try-dive, but not deep reef diving. If you only want to see fish and coral without tanks, our snorkeling guide covers the best spots.
| Dive Site | Level | Highlights | From Samui |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sail Rock (Hin Bai) | Beginner to advanced | Whale sharks, barracuda, swim-through | ~45-60 min |
| Koh Tao pinnacles | Beginner to advanced | Coral gardens, pinnacles, turtles | ~90 min |
| Koh Tan / Ang Thong | Beginner / try-dive | Shallow reefs, calm water | ~15-40 min |
Scuba Diving for Beginners: The Try-Dive
Never dived before? You don't need a licence. A Discover Scuba Diving session — also called a try-dive or baptême de plongée — is designed for absolute first-timers. A certified instructor teaches you a handful of simple skills in shallow water, then guides you on a real dive to a maximum of around 12 meters, staying with you the entire time.
It's the single best way to find out whether diving is for you, with no commitment to a full course. Children from 10 years old can usually take part in a junior version, and if you fall in love with it, the dive can later be credited toward a full PADI Open Water certification.
Try Scuba Diving — No Experience Needed
Our guided Discover Scuba day includes two dives, all equipment and transfer. From 5,900 THB.
See the Try-DiveScuba Diving vs Snorkeling: Which Is Right for You?
If you're unsure whether to dive or snorkel, it comes down to depth, effort and budget. Snorkeling is free-and-easy, family-friendly and lets you cover lots of ground at the surface. Diving takes you down into the reef for a far more immersive encounter — but costs more, takes longer and needs basic water confidence.
- Choose snorkeling if you're with young children, want a relaxed day, or just enjoy floating over reefs. Equipment is included on all our boat tours — see the snorkeling guide.
- Choose a try-dive if you've always been curious about breathing underwater and want the full reef experience, eye-to-eye with the fish.
Best Time to Dive in Koh Samui
Diving is possible year-round, but conditions vary clearly by season:
| Period | Visibility | Conditions | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| March - May | 15-25m | Calm seas, peak whale shark season at Sail Rock | Excellent |
| Feb / June | 12-20m | Warm water, generally calm | Very Good |
| July - Sept | 8-15m | Some wind, variable visibility | Good |
| Oct - Dec | 5-12m | Monsoon, rougher seas, some trips pause | Fair |
Water temperature stays a warm 28-30°C all year, so a thin wetsuit (or none) is enough. For the best mix of visibility and marine life — including whale sharks — aim for March to May.
What to Expect & Safety
A guided dive day from Koh Samui typically runs from early morning to mid-afternoon and includes:
- Round-trip transfer from your Koh Samui accommodation to the departure pier.
- All equipment — BCD, regulator, mask, fins, wetsuit and tanks.
- A certified instructor or divemaster, with small-group or one-to-one supervision for try-divers.
- Two dives, a safety briefing, and refreshments between dives.
Safety note: you should not fly within 18-24 hours of diving, so plan your dive day before your departure flight — not the morning you leave. If you have heart, lung or ear conditions, are pregnant, or have any doubt, tell us in advance: a short medical questionnaire is standard before any try-dive.

Yes. A Discover Scuba Diving session (try-dive / baptême) lets complete beginners dive with a certified instructor, no certification required. After a short briefing in shallow water you dive to a maximum of about 12 meters, always accompanied by your instructor. Only basic comfort in water and reasonable health are needed.
Koh Samui has limited reef diving, so day trips head to Sail Rock (Hin Bai) — the Gulf's premier site, roughly halfway to Koh Phangan — and to the sites around Koh Tao, about 90 minutes north. These offshore pinnacles offer the clear water, big fish schools and seasonal whale sharks the shoreline cannot.
February to September is best, with peak conditions from March to May when visibility is highest and whale sharks are most frequent at Sail Rock. Water stays 28-30°C year-round. The monsoon (late October to December) brings rougher seas and reduced visibility.
Samui Authentic's guided Discover Scuba day is 5,900 THB per person and includes two dives, all equipment, an instructor and round-trip transfer from Koh Samui. Certified divers and PADI courses can also be arranged on request.
Children from 10 years old can usually take part in a junior Discover Scuba dive with depth limits and close instructor supervision. Younger children can enjoy the snorkeling stops instead. Let us know your group's ages and we'll recommend the right option.
