The essentials in 30 seconds: The Koh Samui safari is a full-day excursion inland (jungle, waterfalls, elephants, viewpoints, temples). Allow 7-8h, from 2 500 THB per adult shared with an English-speaking guide, or 12 000 THB for 4 people in private. Choose between an off-road 4x4 (immersive, adventurous) or an air-conditioned van (family-friendly, comfortable). Not to be confused with an African safari — here, no big game, but tropical landscapes, an ethical elephant sanctuary and an authentic Thai lunch. No other operator covers this page in as much depth — you're in the right place.

What is a safari in Koh Samui?

On Koh Samui, the word "safari" refers to a full-day excursion inland, as opposed to the boat trips that dominate the offer (Ang Thong, Koh Tan, Koh Tao). It is the chance to discover the island's hidden side: its jungle, its waterfalls, its panoramic viewpoints, its ethical elephant sanctuary and its rural culture (coconut plantations, local markets, Buddhist temples).

The term comes from "jungle safari" and has become a tourism staple across Thailand. It is not about watching big game (there is none on Koh Samui), but about exploring the island actively: a blend of gentle adventure, nature and culture, ideal for a day away from the beach.

Typical safari itinerary (our Samui Authentic version)

Here is a classic 7-8 hour programme, departing around 9am and returning around 5pm:

  1. Hotel pick-up (Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Maenam) by 4x4 or air-conditioned van, depending on your choice.
  2. Na Muang waterfall 1 — a 20-metre drop, with swimming possible in the natural pool. Easily reached on foot (5 min).
  3. Magic Garden (Buddha Magic Garden) — a garden of Buddhist sculptures in the jungle, created by a farmer in the 1970s, with a viewpoint at 250m above sea level.
  4. Ethical elephant sanctuary Samui Elephant Haven — 45 minutes (1 000 THB adult, 600 THB child) or 3 hours (2 500 THB / 1 800 THB) to feed and observe 5 rescued elephants. No riding, no show.
  5. Thai lunch at a local restaurant (curry, pad thai or a stir-fry of your choice, water and iced tea included). Not a tourist restaurant: you eat where the Thais eat.
  6. Coconut plantation with demonstration — traditional coconut-oil making, fresh coconut juice tasting.
  7. Buddhist temple Wat Plai Laem (the 18-armed Guanyin goddess statue) or Big Buddha (12 metres tall, overlooking the sea).
  8. Final viewpoint Lamai Viewpoint or Lat Ko Viewpoint at sunset — a panoramic view over Koh Samui and the sea.
  9. Return to the hotel around 5pm.

Why choose Samui Authentic for your safari?

Frequently asked questions

Is the Koh Samui safari suitable for children?

Yes, from age 3-4 in an air-conditioned van. For under-6s, choose the van over the 4x4 (fewer bumps). The ethical elephant sanctuary fascinates all ages. Na Muang waterfall 1 is easily reached on foot. Bring swimwear, insect repellent and closed shoes.

How long does the safari last?

7 to 8 hours, from hotel pick-up (around 9am) to return (around 5pm). It can be shortened to a half-day if you go private.

Does the Koh Samui safari include the elephants?

Elephant sanctuary entry is not always included in the shared price (600-1 000 THB child/adult, payable on site). For private or custom safaris, it can be negotiated into the package. We work exclusively with Samui Elephant Haven, a recognised ethical sanctuary.

Can you combine safari + boat on the same day?

Hardly on the same day (each one takes 7-8h). Recommended: safari one day, boat (Ang Thong, Koh Tan or Koh Rap) another day. If you're short on time, the "Build-Your-Own Safari" lets you mix 4-5 activities including a short boat outing.

Should I book in advance?

In high season (December-March, July-August), 3-7 days ahead. Off season, one day in advance is enough. Book online with a 20% deposit, balance on the day.

What's the difference between your safari and a generic one?

Three differences: (1) a consistently English-speaking guide, not a Thai guide speaking rough English, (2) ethical elephant sanctuary only (most operators still work with camps that have elephants ridden), (3) an authentic local lunch, not a tourist restaurant.

Does the safari run in the rain?

Yes, except during a severe weather alert. Tropical showers (June-October) usually fall in the late afternoon and last 30-60 minutes — the safari adapts. The waterfalls are actually more spectacular after the rain. If the alert is severe, we reschedule to the date of your choice at no cost.

Is there a truly ethical elephant sanctuary on Koh Samui?

Yes: Samui Elephant Haven, the only one we include. No elephant riding, no show, no bullhook. The elephants are former working animals bought back from abusive camps. You watch them roam freely across a 30-hectare area, you feed them and you watch them bathe.
