Just 15 minutes south of Koh Samui by longtail boat, Koh Tan (pig island) has some of the best accessible coral reefs in the area. The western coast features shallow reefs starting at just 1-2 meters depth, making it perfect for beginners, children, and nervous swimmers. The coral is healthy and colorful, home to parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish, and blue-spotted stingrays. Best months for snorkeling: February through May offers the clearest water and calmest seas. March and April are the peak months, with visibility sometimes exceeding 25 meters at Ang Thong. Water temperature stays between 28-30°C year-round, so you won't need a wetsuit.

Note on Ang Thong: The national park closes annually from approximately November 1 to mid-December due to monsoon conditions. Plan accordingly if Ang Thong snorkeling is a priority.

All Samui Authentic boat tours include mask, snorkel, and fins in standard sizes. Life jackets are also available and strongly recommended for less confident swimmers. If you wear prescription glasses, we recommend bringing your own prescription mask or disposable contact lenses.

1. Use reef-safe sunscreen — Chemical sunscreens (containing oxybenzone and octinoxate) damage coral reefs. Apply mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreen at least 30 minutes before entering the water.
2. Don't touch the coral — Coral is a living organism. Even gentle contact can damage it and cause painful scratches or stings. Maintain buoyancy and keep your fins away from the reef.
3. Test your mask beforehand — Before getting in the water, try your mask on dry land. Press it to your face without the strap — it should create a gentle suction. Rinse with fresh water if it fogs.
4. Snorkel in the morning — Visibility is almost always best before midday, when the sun is high and the wind hasn't yet picked up.
5. Stay hydrated — Salt water and sun dehydrate you quickly. Drink water regularly before and after snorkeling.
